1880s
William Cropper - Staveley F.C. Suffered a ruptured bowel in a match against Grimsby Town F.C. on January 12, 1889; died the next day. 1920s Horace Fairhurst - Blackpool. Suffered a head injury in a league game at Barnsley in December 1920; died as a result of his injury early in the new year. 1930s John Thomson - Celtic F.C. goalkeeper Thomson was injured during an Old Firm game on September 5, 1931 when he dived for the ball and suffered a fractured skull in an accidental collision with Rangers' Sam English, and died that same evening at the age of 22. Jimmy Thorpe- Sunderland F.C. goalkeeper Chelsea were hovering five points above relegation when they travelled to Roker Park on February 1st 1936. The Pensioners drew 3-3, but the football became inconsequential when Thorpe, just 22 and a diabteic, later collapsed into a coma from which he never recovered. The Times of February 14th reported the jury's verdict as "death by diabetes accelerated by rough usage he received in the game". At the time, the laws of the game allowed more roughing-up. Goalkeepers could be tackled with the ball in their hands or bundled over the line for a goal. Thorpe's lasting football legacy came four months later, however, when the FA introduced a new law forbidding opposition players from kicking or attempting to kick a ball in the goalkeepers possession. 1970s Renato Curi - suffered a heart attack on October 30, 1977 while playing for Perugia in a Serie A match against Juventus. Perugia's ground is named after him. 1980s Samuel Okwaraji - Okwaraji collapsed and died while playing for Nigeria against Angola in a World Cup Qualifier on August 12, 1989. An autopsy showed that the 24-year-old had an enlarged heart and high blood pressure. 1990s David Longhurst - suffered a heart attack on the pitch while playing for York City against Lincoln on 8 September 1990. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. He was the first player to die in a Football League match in 69 years. To honor his memory, York City named one of the stands at the Bootham Crescent stadium after him. Mistar- Indonesian star Mistar was trampled to death by a herd of pigs that stormed the pitch in 1995. His team were warming up for a forthcoming game. His funeral was attended by 50,000 fans. 2000s Cătălin Hîldan - died while playing for Dinamo Bucharest on 5 October 2000; the North Stand of Dinamo's stadium is named in his honour. Eri Irianto -The Persebaya Surabaya's midfielder passed away at 1:45 AM on April 2, 2000 in Dr. Sutomo Hospital in Surabaya, East Java after heart failure. Eri was taken to the hospital during halftime of Persebaya's league match against PSIM Yogyakarta because he said that he was having trouble breathing. He had some treatment at the hospital but there was nothing the doctors could do to save his life. Hernán Gaviria - was hit by a bolt of lightning during a training session for Deportivo Cali and was killed instantly on October 24, 2002. Giovanni Córdoba - was hit by a bolt of lightning during a training session for Deportivo Cali and died on October 27, 2002 due to his injuries. http://www.larepublica.com.uy/lr3/pu...mages/29f1.gif Marc-Vivien Foé - collapsed while playing for Cameroon on June 26, 2003 whilst playing in the FIFA Confederations Cup semifinal between his country and Colombia, and died shortly afterward in hospital. An autopsy later revealed the cause of death was a heart attack caused by an enlarged right ventricle. ![]() Miklós Fehér - died while playing for SL Benfica against Vitória S.C. on January 25, 2004; as the physicians realized that he had heart failure they performed immediate CPR on him, by which point the audience realized the gravity of the situation. An ambulance entered the field to take Feher. His condition was covered by the Portuguese throughout the day, and before midnight Feher's death was confirmed. The Public Prosecutor (the Portuguese agency responsible for the release of autopsy details) announced that Fehér died from cardiac arrhythmia brought on by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In memory of him, Benfica have retired the number 29 shirt which he wore during his time at the club. He was remembered by many and his death caused a profound shock in Portuguese sport. Serginho - died of a heart attack while playing for São Caetano against São Paulo on 27 October 2004. ![]() Matt Gadsby of Hinckley United collapsed on the pitch on September 9, 2006, during a Conference North game against Harrogate Town and died soon afterwards in Harrogate District Hospital. Medical tests revealed he died from a heart condition known as Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy, an inherited condition that affects the muscle of the right ventricle of the heart. ![]() Cristiano Junior collided with Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Subrata Paul in the 78th minute of the Federation Cup finals while scoring his second goal after chasing the ball into the box, staggered away, then collapsed. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The game continued after Junior was taken off the field. He was dead on arrival at Hosmat Hospital. Dempo won the Cup, 2-0. ![]() Antonio Puerta: 22 year old Sevilla FC player Puerta died on August 28, 2007 of multiple organ failure, stemming from prolonged cardiac arrest, three days after suffering from several heart attacks during a league game against Getafe CF on 25 August, 2007. ![]() Chaswe Nsofwa: Zambia-born player signed by Hapoel Beersheba, died on August 29, 2007 from sudden heart failure during a training match against Maccabi Beersheba. ![]() Siapa ya Mistar itu? |
