Ini pemain yang sangat ingin main untuk timnas Indonesia.

Van Dijk seeks new Roar deal and Indonesian honours

INDONESIA did everything besides score in its Asian Cup qualifier with the Socceroos - but had it known Sergio van Dijk was available the outcome could have been different.

The Queensland Roar striker wants to be considered to play for Australia's Group B rival after revealing he has Indonesian heritage.

More news in our soccer section

Van Dijk was born in the Netherlands but hopes his Indonesian grandparents qualify him to play for the world's 144th-ranked national team.

"I feel as much Dutch as I do Indonesian," he said.

"With the history of my family I would consider it an honour to play for them."

The 26-year-old is the frontman for Queensland as it heads into Friday night's first-leg elimination final against Central Coast in Gosford.

The return leg will be played in Brisbane the following week but van Dijk has an eye on playing for Indonesia, maybe even against his skipper Craig Moore, when the Socceroos host the Indonesians next year.

Van Dijk's maternal grandparents Frans and Johanna Polnaya come from the Netherlands' former colony of the Dutch East Indies.

Frans was a soldier in the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army but the army was disbanded in 1950, the year after Indonesia's sovereignty was recognised.

Fearing persecution from indigenous groups, Frans and Johanna fled to the Netherlands.

"When the Dutch left the locals were so angry they had to leave the country," he said.

"My grandfather is no longer alive but my grandmother still lives in the Netherlands."

Van Dijk said representing the Netherlands was beyond him but he felt he could "add something" to Indonesia's campaign.

"Playing for Holland is not a reality for me," he said.

"I've still got family there, in Jakarta.

''I've been there and I speak the language.

''There's a bond there."

After a slow start to the A-League season – he scored just once from the side's first 11 games – van Dijk's prowess was a major contributor to his team's qualification for the finals.

In his own words, the Dutchman powered home like a "train", scoring 10 goals from 10 outings to finish equal second in the race for the Golden Boot.

His was a tough initiation: Roar fans had grown impatient with their import's inability to score.

However Queensland coach Frank Farina backed his recruit:

"The crowd was on Sergio's back and they gave him heaps of stick," he said.

Van Dijk said: "But you never lose your ability.

''You might lose confidence, but not what you've learnt.

"Once you score one, they start going in off your knee and all of a sudden you're on a hot streak.

"I'd had periods before when I couldn't score and the more I worried about it the worse I played.

''This time I tried a different approach: to stay calm.

''I had self-belief and the gaffer (Farina) had confidence in me as well."

Growing up in football-obsessed Holland, there was never any doubt over a young van Dijk's career path.

During school holidays he would work for his father Roel's computer software business, or toil on farms picking potatoes.

All the while he would dream of football.

At 17 he signed his first contract for Dutch first-division club FC Groningen but could do no better than start from the bench.

After leaving the club in 2002, he spent six years playing for second-division teams Helmond Sport and FC Emmen.

It was fortuitous for van Dijk and Queensland that the striker was considering a change at the same time the Roar needed a replacement for Reinaldo.

The Roar's Dutch connections put them in touch with van Dijk's manager who brokered a trial for the powerfully built centre-forward.

"I didn't see a way back into first division," he said.

"The coaches there had already formed opinions on me and how I play.

''So I thought maybe I need a fresh start somewhere else."

It was perhaps also fortunate that the Dutchman had become aware of Australia's professional league via last year's exhibition match between Sydney FC and David Beckham's LA Galaxy.

"If you'd asked me 18 months ago where I'd be now, I'd never have said Australia," van Dijk said.

Farina was not instantly won over by the trialist.

"To be honest the jury was out when he first got here,'' Farina said.

''But as a coach, you can tell if a player knows his way around the park.

''And Craig Moore, who I've known for a long time, said to me: 'Sergio's got something. He looks the goods'."

Van Dijk has one more year to run on his Roar contract.

However, if he and Farina have their way the deal will be extended.

"He's hitting his peak,'' Farina said.

''There's no doubt we'll look to keep him on (beyond 2010) as long as he's happy to do that."

PSSI jangan diem aja dong?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slick van Dijk puts his hand up - for Indonesia

February 27, 2009

THE A-League's joint top scorer, Serginho van Dijk, wants to make two things clear - he doesn't have any Brazilian heritage and he wants to play for Indonesia.
Born and raised in the Netherlands, van Dijk's ancestry has been the subject of much confusion since he arrived in Australia at the start of the season to play for Queensland Roar. But in the wake of Queensland's painful exit from the title race in last weekend's preliminary final, van Dijk is keen to clear up the misconceptions.
"I have no idea where all that talk about Brazil came from," he said. "I have no Brazilian blood at all. My father is Dutch, my mother is Indonesian. Of course my first name is Brazilian, because that was the name of a famous Brazilian striker at the 1982 World Cup, which is the year I was born. Maybe my skin colour also confuses some people."
What hasn't confused anyone is van Dijk's stunning second half of the season, when he raced to the top of the scorer's charts [12 goals] - scoring 10 goals in his last 11 games as Queensland mounted a serious assault on the championship, only to fall at the penultimate hurdle in Adelaide. Recently recognised as Fox Sports' player of the year, van Dijk's headline-grabbing performances also alerted Indonesian football authorities, who now need to overcome a mountain of red tape to clear him to play for the Merah Putih.
Intriguingly, Indonesia are competing in the same 2011 Asian Cup qualifying campaign as Australia and van Dijk could find himself up against Roar teammate Craig Moore when the Socceroos host Indonesia in the return fixture in March next year. The two teams recently played out a scoreless draw in Jakarta.
"I'm really serious about this," van Dijk said. "I have had some people contact me, I had a talk with them, and there was a meeting last week with the Indonesian Football Federation [PSSI]. They are positive about me playing for Indonesia. So that's good. Now we have to sort it out regarding nationality. I would like double nationality. I don't want to give up my Dutch passport, because it brings up all sorts of negative things for me. After my career I want to go home, so that would make it very hard if I have to give up my nationality.
"But there is a friendly game coming up against Manchester United [July 24] and they already asked me if I want to play that game. It's a non-FIFA game, so I don't need citizenship for that. Of course, I would love to play."
While Indonesia don't have a history of naturalising foreigners to play for the national team - their professional league is full of talented African and South American players, many of whom have been playing in the country for several years - van Dijk's heritage will help, although he will need to become a test case for the authorities. As it stands Indonesian law prohibits dual citizenship, but football officials have long argued the case on behalf of the large Dutch/Indonesian community based in the Netherlands - seeing it as potential source of untapped talent.

As it stands Indonesian law prohibits dual citizenship, but football officials have long argued the case on behalf of the large Dutch/Indonesian community based in the Netherlands - seeing it as potential source of untapped talent.

Van Dijk would love to become a pioneer, not simply for football reasons, but because he retains a strong affinity with his Indonesian roots.
"I go there many times to visit my family," he said. "My grandfather is from the Molucca Islands, my grandmother is from Java. I can speak Bahasa, but where most of my family is coming from we also speak another dialect. But I can understand most things, although it takes a bit of time. I still have a good bond with my Indonesian background."
With Indonesia historically lacking a genuine target man, van Dijk's claims are gathering substance and an international debut would cap off what has been a memorable first season in Australia after years of moderate achievement in the lower levels of Dutch football. "This season opened a lot of doors for me, you never know what to expect in football," van Dijk said. "Now I have this exciting opportunity for me and I hope it can be sorted out. It has always been a dream of mine to play international football and I think I have the best years of my career in front of me.
"Indonesia are a good team and they're improving. I watched them against Jamaica two years ago, I think they won 2-0, and I saw the last game against Australia and they pass the ball better, they keep possession better. I am sure they can qualify for the Asian Cup and I would like to help them get there."
